No Food Feud here!

There’s a new rootin’ tootin’ eatin’ cookbook in town, “Eat’n with The Hatfields,” by Jack Hatfield Jr. While most of the recipes don’t fit into our criteria, being healthy is being happy, and sometimes you just need to have a little fun with your food.  That said, and if you know the story of the famous feuding family The Hatfields & McCoys then you’ll know about Devil Anse.  It’s truly our best pick in the book! Devil Anse (Deviled) Eggs.  Even if it’s just for fun, give this book to some of your healthy eatin’ friends and say, “sometimes you just need some knee slappin’ eats!

Pathwaves to Life!

The human brain is extremely complex. It can be difficult to ever fully understand how it operates and functions. Pathwaves located in Miami, Florida has discovered, what they like to call, “Neural Empowerment Process.” It IS in fact possible to re-parent the cells in one’s brain which can ultimately lead to living a happier and healthier life.

The Neural Empowerment Process has proven to be successful in various issues including stress, anxiety, ADD/ADHD, brain injury recovery, eating disorder, drug and/or alcohol abuse, and more.

Geoff Cole, the creator of Neural Empowerment Process, is extremely passionate about what he does and is passionate about helping people. The primary purpose in creating this is simply to help people live happier and more fulfilling lives regardless of what they have gone through, what they are struggling with and whatever their circumstances may be.

Geoff Cole, Founder, Pathwaves

According to Geoff Cole and the Pathwaves team, it is crucial to self-train our autonomic nervous systems as well as other neurological systems rather than allow genetics, our environment and our beliefs to be responsible for the development and functionality of these systems.

True control of neurological responses and giving our brain the opportunity to function at the highest possible capacity will ultimately lead to a happier, more fulfilling life. As humans, we not only deserve to live a happy, fulfilled life but we owe it to ourselves to do whatever we can to experience this because we only have one life to live.

Tru Protein

Many weekend warriors and everyday fitness enthusiasts want to make good choices when it comes to supplementation – but the world of sports nutrition can be intimidating.  trusource™, a new fitness nutrition brand is aiming to make protein supplementation more simple, accessible and unintimidating for “real” people.

We got our hands on the Trusource product line and are pleased to share our thoughts. First, the packaging is definitely different from your typical sports nutrition brands – powders are much more manageable than the standard giant tubs, and RTD bottles have good shelf-appeal. The labeling is simple and clear – and directs users to the Trusource website.  There, I found a convenient protein calculator to help me determine how much protein I should get per day. Here’s how my recommended intake was calculated: .5g of protein x 175lbs = 87.5g of protein per-day.

Hitting that number is pretty easy with the great-tasting selection of Trusource products.  There’s light and refreshing Protein Water.  There’s tasty Anytime Protein & Protein +Energy (my fav!) and then there’s Protein Java, which is a great idea!  It’s a ready-to-drink iced coffee beverage packed with 16 grams of protein and caffeine, with only 100 calories and four grams of sugar.

The Trusource website also provides easy-to-make recipes featuring their protein products. Your diet won’t be boring with these shakes, desserts and protein-packed pancakes. Before or after your workout, a go-to-source is Trusource: http://mytrusource.com/

Happy HEAT Running New Year!

HEAT Running, personal trainer and co-founder Joseph Phillips Tips for 2016!

sD0DXRHi_400x400

1) Don’t max out on your 1st day. Assuming that you have had a long lapse or its your first time in the gym, lifting the most weight possible isn’t a good idea right out of the gate. Lay a foundation and build up first. Stay consistent and there will be plenty of time to test your limits.

2) Don’t refuse the help of a personal trainer. Most gyms offer a complementary session you can schedule on your first day working out. Do it! Yes, he/she wants to sell you sessions but most trainers also genuinely want your help! Plus a few PT sessions can put you on the right track toward your goals.

3) Don’t copy the routine of the guy who looks the way you want to look. We are all created differently. The guy with the V-shape and the six pack may not know a whole lot about exercise. He could be doing dangerous exercises or things that may not fit in with your current fitness level. We are all different and need to find a routine that fits our genetics and goals.

4) Don’t hit on the hottest girl you see. Yes, you are gonna see some beautiful women working out! That is one of the perks of being a gym member, but if you approach the hot chick on the first day you may have missed the behemoth she came in with. While you are flirting, Adonis walks up behind you and in no time you are either nursing a fat lip or you will be forever known as “that guy.” Wait a few days to make sure she isn’t coming to the gym with her man.

5) Don’t let a trainer push you to the puking point. If you decide to do a training session remember you are in control. A very small percentage of fitness professionals will try to push you too much. Know your body and your first day limits. Once again, if you go too hard and can’t make it to the restroom, you will be “that guy” who puked by the pull-up machine.

TIP:

Drinking at least 2 liters of filtered water daily is essential to stay well hydrated and also to help thin the sticky secretions. It is also important to replenish cellular salts (particularly sodium and potassium levels). Squeezing a little lemon juice into your glass of water will add some potassium to help promote the release of sodium bicarbonate in the pancreas for optimal enzyme activity!

Tips for Maintaining A Healthy Weight

Maintaining a healthy weight and controlling emotional eating tips by Senior Dietitian, Amanda Foti, from Selvera Wellness

  1. Define yourself as a healthy and fit individual. Finding value in making healthy choices will help you stick with them long term.
  2. Make healthy eating and exercising a lifestyle you live, not a temporary plan you are follow to meet a goal. A healthy lifestyle shouldn’t have an end point, it should just be the way you live.
  3. Understand what emotions are triggers. Before starting to change anything, be mindful of how you’re feeling when you have a desire to eat and identify the emotion behind it.
  4. Focus on relieving the emotional triggers. Whether its stress, boredom, sadness, there are alternative actions not involving food that can work to relieve the emotion. Brainstorm a few alternative actions you can rely on in the moment.
  5. Keep a food journal. This allows you to reflect on what your food choices are and identify where the trouble areas are. Being accountable for your food choices will make you more mindful in the moment.
  6. Don’t deprive yourself. Taking away foods you love will only make the desire to have them stronger. Find a healthy balance of enjoying foods you love with nutritious choices and exercise.
  7. Have patience. Changing habits as complex as emotional eating takes time and many attempts of practice. Expect to not be perfect and be okay with it. Rather than setting a goal to go ‘cold turkey’ focus on decreasing the incidents of emotional eating over time.
