WINNING HEALTH, BEAUTY & PERSONAL CARE

By: Florence Wright, Retail Analyst at PlanetRetail RNG

Consumer spending on health and beauty is increasing globally, with Asia & Oceania driving most of the growth. North America is currently the largest region in terms of spend, accounting for 36% of global revenue. Whilst strong growth is projected, its share will decline to 33% as other regions grow at a faster rate.

Leading specialists compete in a highly concentrated health and beauty sector. Walgreens and CVS dominate the health & beauty sector, contributing to 62% of the top 10 specialists’ sales, which is set to reach 65% by 2022. With global consolidation a key trend within the sector, smaller specialists will need to invest in their fulfilment capabilities and broader health and beauty service provision, to compete over the next five years.

Other top global retailers are also adding more health & beauty services to their overall proposition. Amazon and Zalando have recently launched online beauty brands, whilst Alibaba is investing in its provision of the ‘future pharmacy’. Such developments mean that innovation across the health, beauty and personal care sector will be increasingly inspired by retailers beyond the traditional drugstore or pharmacy channel.

As consumer interest in health & beauty peaks, the sector will grow in importance. Health & beauty consumer spending as a share of total retail format sales is set to steadily increase from 5.6% in 2012 to almost 6.5% by 2022. This increase in share means growth in consumer spending on health & beauty is set to outpace growth in overall global retail format sales.

For retailers and suppliers selling beauty, recent focus has centred around elevating the customer experience of shopping the category and, particularly, ensuring in-store experiences are reflected online. Integrating technologies such as AR into product merchandising and embracing demonstration through in-store events or online tutorials, are just some of the ways stakeholders are engaging consumers in the sector.

Weaning Off Sugar Post – Holidays

By Nicole Avena, PhD

Bouncing back from the holidays and into a healthy eating and exercise routine is always easier said than done. What’s also easier is falling back into old habits, especially around the holidays.

On the bright side, getting back on track doesn’t have to be difficult. However, you may feel discouraged if you try to go back to your usual routine all at once. Instead, it’s better to wean yourself off the sugar and ease yourself back into an exercise routine.

Getting back in shape

Even for someone who is in shape, taking just a week off of exercise can decrease your fitness. Thus, jumping right back into your usual routine can feel difficult or be tough on your body, potentially causing injury or a lot of soreness at the very least. Remember that getting back in shape won’t happen in just one day.

Instead of hitting the treadmill and running until you can’t anymore, or struggling to lift heavy weights, take it slow! For example, take a few extra minutes to warm up–stretch, walk on the treadmill, or do a light jog. If weights are more your thing, start with something lighter than you’re used to, and do extra reps rather than bumping up the weight.

Some other post-holiday sweat session examples include: a home workout, a gentle yoga class, keep it short (30 minutes or less), and walk as much as possible (around the neighborhood, at work, in town, etc).

Saying No to Sugar

Good news: you don’t have to quit sugar cold turkey! In fact, cutting out sugar all together might make you more likely to indulge in unhealthy eating habits, such as bingeing. Instead, you want to wean off sugar for the best results. Here’s what you should do:

  1. Find out what is triggering you to eat sugar. Is it an afternoon slump? Are candies and cookies lying around your house? Once you recognize these triggers, you’ll already be able to make better decisions and ask yourself, “do I really need this?”
  2. Manage your portion sizes. Instead of depriving yourself of sugar, limit your portion sizes. One tip is to portion out your treats ahead of time if you can, by separating amounts in Tupperware or plastic baggies.
  3. Out of sight, out of mind. Instead of leaving holiday treats around the house or out in the open, put things away in drawers or in the fridge. Sometimes we don’t have cravings for a treat until we physically see it, but if it’s put away, then you won’t be tempted to reach for it.
  4. Make healthy snacks available. This step is extremely important. Typically we grab sugary treats because they are easy and readily available! Buy pre-cut veggies and fruits with healthy dips like hummus or guacamole to store front and center in your fridge. Leave fresh fruit on the counter so it’s the first thing you see when you enter the kitchen.
  5. Make sure you are getting a balanced diet, and use a supplement. Your food choices  may not have been the healthiest the past few weeks, which means you may be lacking in some essential nutrients. Even when we are trying our best to eat healthy, we can’t always eat in the proportions that we need to get the correct amount of vitamins and minerals that we need to feel out best, so taking a supplement is key. Opt for a supplement that is complete, like vitafusion’s Women’s or Men’s Multivitamin. These come in gummy form, so they also can help satisfy your candy fix (in a healthy way)!

Sugary Swaps

Finding yummy alternatives to your favorite treats will be a huge help when it comes to kicking sugar to the curb. Here are some ideas to start implementing when thinking of reaching for one of your holiday favorites:

Candy canes → Peppermint tea

Chocolate or fudge → 1 – 2 oz of dark chocolate, preferably 70% cacao or higher

Cookies → Chopped apple with cinnamon and raisins

Candies → Grapes (fresh or frozen)

Hot chocolate → Make your own with 1 cup hot water, 1 tbsp cacao, ¼ tsp vanilla

extract, and 2 tsp maple syrup

Alcohol → Fruity, herbal tea or seltzer with lime

Health Hacks for New Years

10 Health Hacks for New Years Weight Loss Resolutions

By Matt Moore-Waitkus

For years, I made New Year’s resolutions to get healthier only to fail within weeks. But this year, I did something different – and lost over 80 pounds.

So, how did I do it? I changed the way I thought about food – with the help of these 10 health hacks.

1. Weight loss is a marathon, not a sprint. Try to keep your mind on your overall goal if you find yourself discouraged after a bad day or week.
2. Find something active to do every day. If you can’t get to the gym, then walk. If you can’t get out for a walk, stand up while watching TV.  Just do something to break the cycle of being sedentary.
3. Try to let go of the idea of “forbidden” food. I met my goals by largely overhauling what I eat, but I have still had occasional indulgences here and there… and have really enjoyed them!
4. Plan, plan, plan! Meal prep has been one of the biggest strategies for me to eat healthier and more mindfully. Rather than relying on fast food near my office, I can prepare lunches for the week every Sunday and have those ready to grab on my way out the door every morning on the way to work.
5. Find inspiration online. For me, it was scouring the Internet for before-and-after weight loss success stories in blogs and YouTube. It was so valuable to me to see other people who have accomplished similar goals, and learn some tips from them as well.
6. I looked into the reasons why I craved specific foods. Being aware of the reasons helped me overcome many cravings.
7. I realized there are certain emotions that trigger specific cravings. Once I learned to identify these emotions, I was able to distinguish between rational and irrational thoughts and behaviors.
8. Surroundings can cause cravings as well. I started to become aware of how my environment impacts my behavior.
9. I asked someone close to me to help me stick to my goal. Any time I’ve had a struggle, I knew I had a great safety net of people who helped me regain my focus and push forward toward my goal. My husband, Keith, has been especially supportive.
10. I keep Noom Coach, a weight loss program, in my pocket at all times. My goal specialist with Noom, Peppiina, also helps keep me in line with personalized eating plans, giving me nudges when I fall off track.

– Liz Cruz M.D.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND DIGESTIVE ENZYMES:

In order for your body to benefit from what you eat, you need digestive enzymes to break down the food. Proteins need to be broken down into amino acids; fats need to be broken down into fatty acids and cholesterol; and carbohydrates need to be broken down into simple sugars. At birth we are given a certain potential for manufacturing enzymes in our body, creating an enzyme “reserve.” However, if we do not continually replenish that reserve through proper nutrition, it runs out. Enzyme deficiency can cause digestive issues, a weakened immune system, fatigue, acne, eczema, headaches, mood swings, joint pain.

Having a lack of digestive enzymes puts tremendous stress on the body, because it is then forced to draw reserves from other locations throughout the body. The more we depend on our body to create digestive enzymes without the proper tools, the less time and energy the body’s systems and organs have for rebuilding and replacing worn out damaged cells and tissue. This puts a tremendous amount of stress on the endocrine system, as well as the immune system. After years and years of relying on our “reserve,” it is eventually depleted.
